Online dating for beginners

When it comes to online dating, I’m about as green as you can get. Recently I went to a dating site and gave it a shot. Here’s what I learned.

Look at the other personals before you write your own. I started writing mine, putting in a lot of detail before I thought of doing this. Turned out that most of the personals that attracted me on this site were short and kind of funny. So I followed suit and low and behold I got a few messages.

Pick your picture carefully. Again, I creeped around on other pages and I noticed a that the ones that seemed to work the best were vacation photos. Think about it, those pictures usually have natural lighting, you are relaxed on vacation and it shows what you’re interested in. Also important is to make sure the photo isn’t too old (you want the guy to recognize you when you meet him!).

Choose your user name wisely. This says a lot about who you are, so if you pick “divorced-diva”, you’ll attract a different guy than if you chose something like “happy-piano-girl”. Also take a look at what the user names are of the guys contacting you if his name is “hard-rod-4-u” you might want to reconsider meeting him for drinks.

Chatting online is an interesting thing too. Try and keep things light, if the guy gets sexual within the first ten minutes of chatting, it’s not a good sign. Dating sites are full of singles for singles just looking to hook up, if you’re looking for more, don’t talk to people who can’t keep it clean.

Meeting in person. I haven’t done this yet but it seems like the best thing would be to obviously meet in a public area. For some reason I feel like a mall would actually be good, you can walk around, chat about the different shops, so it’s not just the two of you staring at each other the whole time. I think going out for alcoholic drinks the first time you meet someone is a bad idea, what if he slips something in yours while you’re in the bathroom? Best to keep it safe the first few times.

Obviously this is just one girl’s opinion on online dating. Ask around, see what tips you can gather from your friends and relative. Feel free to post your idea’s in the comments section :)
